Based in Slovakia, the label was founded in 2018 by Kristína Šipulová after graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Slovakia and the Oslo National Academy of Arts, Norway. The main vision of the studio is to bring the fascination of people who are dedicated to craft techniques into the modern world to enrich our everyday lives.
With the help of local craftswomen, each garment is built from the yarn. The process starts from creating the warp, setting up the looms, weaving the fabric, pattern cutting and handstitching the final garment. The garments are versatile and made to last for generations.
Studio Kristina Sipulova focuses on slower pace, fewer pieces produced, patience, investment of time in the production and interdisciplinary collaborations. The studio showcased as part of collaborative installation with Flatwig studio during Milan Design Week, London Design Fair, and Paris Design Week 2019.
‘From the Yarns’
The collection is about a return to the origin – the origin of garment production “from the yarn” which refers to the past and why these garments are still preserved and valued today. It also refers to the place where I grew up where I re-collaborate with the craftsmen who are still devoted to these remarkable crafts as hand-weaving. Fabrics are handwoven and by the selection of yarns and their combination, the unique character of fabric is created for each kind of garment. The fabrics are woven directly for the cut, producing minimal production waste. Pattern design solutions allow maximum use of woven fabrics for the final garments.
The fabrics are firm but at the same time airy, allowing pieces to be loved for a long time. Silk yarns from Japan, where they are hand-spun, are combined with preserved cotton and linen yarns from the past in Slovakia. For some of the garments, I sourced vintage linens from the region I grew up in, that were woven over a hundred years ago. The aim is to give new purpose to carefully collected textiles and to reconcile traditional craftsmanship with wearable clothes. By re-using linen fabrics handwoven in the past by craftsmen who were devoted to these remarkable crafts, my aim is to tell the story behind the textile and to create the intrinsic narrative through garments. I believe that emotive quality of clothing can enable a meaningful relationship with fashion.
