Susan Fang takes a 1-week trip to inner Mongolia for her AW21 Campaign

After a busy season, returning to nature was paramount for Susan and her team. Armed with the Autumn Winter 2021 collection ‘AIR • TIME’, Susan Fang took a one-week trip to inner Mongolia to shoot her campaign with no plan, but with a desire to connect to humanity and nature.

Just like her previous campaigns, these impromptu road trips have always given Susan renewed perspectives by reconnecting to her inspirations. AW21 was no different as she embarked on a journey with a curiosity and eagerness to go back to the very thing that inspires her, nature in its purest form.

Susan’s respect for nature not only influences her aesthetics but her design and work process too. Susan looks to innovate through textiles while being respectful of nature and reducing waste in the creation process. For AW21 Susan Fang developed a sustainable method called Air-Ribbon using strips of ribbon to create a new zero waste-making process. Dresses and separates are created with the Air-Ribbon method in lightweight coloured tulles, organza and velvet, playfully modelled by locals she met on her journey.

Susan looks to the foundation of the brand and is reminded that Fashion is about humanity and its interaction with nature. China is a country full of culture with 56 different indigenous minority groups. Susan and her team travelled to inner Mongolia where they were met with warmth and kindness from strangers in the Mongolian Yurt. Strangers became new friends and were invited to explore Susan Fang’s creations.

Susan lives by the mantra that “The most beautiful thing is already here in this world, to create beauty we just have to go back to nature”. Her collection is about honouring the people she meets, and the energy they transmit, to create new beauty. It is this exchange of energy between humanity that Susan harnesses in this photographic series captured by her long-time collaborator Charles Guo.
